Challenges
Johns Hopkins Management has issued the following challenges to Johns Hopkins clinical staff:
No harm by infection
No harm by medication error
Facilitate creation of new models of care
No harm by infection
It is estimated that 5% of patients admitted to an acute care hospital in the United States acquire a new infection, with more than 2 million hospital-acquired infections per year and an annual cost of more than $2 billion. Johns Hopkins Management has issued the challenge to the organization to not harm any of our patients through acquired infections. The initial focus of these projects will be on application of evidence-based guidelines to reduce bloodstream and surgical site infection rates.
No harm by medication error
Reports issued by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) have indicated that every year medication errors are responsible for at least 7,000 avoidable deaths within the United States. The IOM cites one study finding that about 2% of hospital admissions experienced a preventable adverse drug event, although the majority are not fatal. Johns Hopkins Management has issued the challenge to the organization to not harm any of our patients through medication errors.
Facilitate creation of new models of care
Johns Hopkins Management has issued the challenge to the organization to identify, test, and disseminate innovative models of care that may improve patient outcomes and the inpatient experience. Such models may involve integration and planning of current healthcare processes to ensure continuity of care, or programs that bolster communication between the hospital and patient before and after discharge to improve chronic disease management.
